Library induction

This session serves as an introduction to the wide array of resources and services provided by Knowledge and Library Services, designed to support you throughout your career at Barts Health NHS Trust. 

This session is offered both in-person and online via MS Teams.

All Barts Health NHS Trust staff. 

No requirements.

By the end of this session, you will know how to:

  • join the Library and set up an OpenAthens account
  • find books and journals within the library collection
  • find and apply subject guides relevant to your information needs
  • request an evidence search
  • request a training session
  • know where to find the library

Essential tools for national resources

This session will help you have access e-journal articles to support your evidence-based practice at your fingertips. Whether you're a seasoned healthcare professional or just starting your journey, this course is designed to support your informed decision-making and ability to provide high-quality patient care. Join us to enhance your search skills by exploring online clinical decision support tools and evidence-based resources, including UpToDate, BMJ Best practice, DynaMed, and Trip Pro database. We will also cover e-book platforms such as Bookboon, Kortex etc. 
 

All Barts Health NHS Trust staff who need guidance on accessing evidence-based resources like point-of-care tools, reviews, guideline and summaries and e-books.

Participants are required

  • to have an OpenAthens account.
  • to be a member of the library. Please register with the library here.

By the end of this session, you will be able to: 

  • understand how to access e-journal articles and e-books to enhance knowledge and research skills.
  • develop the ability to utilise point-of-care tools such as BMJ Best Practice, UpToDate, DynaMed etc. effectively for evidence-based clinical insights and up-to-date medical knowledge. 
  • explore Trip Pro database for clinical decision support and research. 
  • use with confidence e-book platforms

How to search the Knowledge and Library Hub

This course is an introduction to the Knowledge and Library Hub to quickly find, access and share reliable high-quality information. The Hub is designed for quick searches. It offers a simple interface and basic filtering options. 

This session is available both in-person and online via MS Teams. It can be conducted as a demonstration or an interactive session. For the interactive format, you may find the face-to-face option more beneficial.

All Barts Health NHS Trust staff who want to efficiently use the Hub to access nationally and locally funded subscription resources.

If you require more advanced skills for systematic reviews or comprehensive literature searches, consider our Intermediate course instead.

Participants are required

  • to have an OpenAthens account.
  • to be a member of the library. Please register with the library here.

By the end of this session, you will be able to:

  • access the Knowledge and Library Hub​
  • explain the importance of signing in with OpenAthens​
  • conduct a search and refine results ​
  • view full text and request items 
  • save and share results

Database searching (Intermediate)

This course is designed to familiarise participants with the major databases, including Medline, Embase, CINAHL, and PsychInfo. It aims to equip you with the essential skills needed to effectively search for evidence to support your research project, focusing specifically on utilising keywords to devise a robust search strategy.

This session is available both in-person and online via MS Teams. It can be conducted as a demonstration or an interactive session. For the interactive format, you may find the face-to-face option more beneficial.

All Barts Health NHS Trust staff, including those interested in conducting evidence searches for a wide range of projects, including but not limited to patients’ cases, audits, services change, guideline and policy development, systematic reviews, and other research initiatives.

If you are new to searching or just want a quick search with basic filtering options, you might want to attend How to search the Knowledge and Library Hub first. 

Participants are required

By the end of this session, you will be able to:

  • identify the right database for your search topic
  • formulate a well-structured search question and identify its key concepts
  • use the keyword technique including truncation symbol, Boolean operators, and exact phrase searching 
  • edit a search strategy
  • apply search limits
  • save both the search strategy and results for future reference
  • view full text and request items

Database searching (Advanced)

This course is designed to expand attendees’ database research skills. It covers thesaurus searching which is another technique to search databases. Combining both keywords and thesaurus techniques is recommended to ensure a comprehensive search strategy.

This session is available both in-person and online via MS Teams. It can be conducted as a demonstration or an interactive session. For the interactive format, you may find the face-to-face option more beneficial.

All Barts Health NHS Trust staff who have attended the Database searching (Intermediate) course or meet its learning objectives, and want to expand their research skills, especially those embarking on a systematic review which requires a comprehensive search strategy.

Participants are required:

  • to have either attended the Finding the Evidence (Intermediate) course or be confident in searching databases using the keyword technique, including truncation symbol, Boolean Operators, exact phrase searching, nesting, and limits setting.
  • to have an OpenAthens account.
  • to be a member of the library. Please register with the library here.

By the end of this session, you will be able to:

  • apply proximity operators and nesting
  • use the thesaurus when searching databases, including understanding majoring terms, the exploding feature, and including subheadings
  • combine both keyword and thesaurus searching to ensure comprehensive and precise retrieval of information
  • search multiple databases effectively, enabling thorough literature reviews and research
  • create Alerts to stay updated on new research developments and literature relevant to specific topics

Health literacy awareness

To provide participants with an understanding of the impact poor health literacy can have on our patients, how to start addressing these issues and the challenges of engaging with patients with poor health literacy skills.

This session is offered both in-person and online via MS Teams.

 

All Barts Health NHS Trust staff who provide health information to patients and carers or has a responsibility around planning and shaping population health services or reducing health inequalities.

Participants are require to be a member of the library. Please register with the library here.

By the end of this session, you will:

  • understand what health literacy is and its relevance to professional practice
  • be aware of the impact of limited health literacy on individuals' health and well-being

  • recognise a variety of tools and resources that can be utilised to support individuals with limited health literacy and to promote health literacy in practical settings

An abridged 20 minute version is also available, and is suitable as a brief introduction to the topic at team meetings.
