His Dark Materials - Philip Pullman
Northern Lights introduces Lyra, an orphan, who lives in a parallel universe in which science, theology and magic are entwined. Lyra's search for a kidnapped friend uncovers a sinister plot involving stolen children and turns into a quest to understand a mysterious phenomenon called Dust. In The Subtle Knife she is joined on her journey by Will, a boy who possesses a knife that can cut windows between worlds. As Lyra learns the truth about her parents and her prophesied destiny, the two young people are caught up in a war against celestial powers that ranges across many worlds and leads to a thrilling conclusion in The Amber Spyglass.
The epic story Pullman tells is not only a spellbinding adventure featuring armoured polar bears, magical devices, witches and daemons, it is also an audacious and profound re-imagining of Milton's Paradise Lost.
Megan says "I'm not a huge reader, but when I do read I love to read books that are completely out of this universe. I love the creativity behind fantasy and sci-fi. I really appreciate the talent and skills required to come up with a whole world and story with characters and plots that I could never have even dreamed of. If I was on a desert island, it would have those mythical and creative books piled up next to me. One of my favourites is the His Dark Materials Trilogy by Philip Pullman. He also does some beautiful short story books too".
Still to read and what I'd listen to ...
Women Don't Owe You Pretty - Florence Given
Women Don't Owe You Pretty is the ultimate book for anyone who wants to challenge the out-dated narratives supplied to us by the patriarchy. Through Florence's story you will learn how to protect your energy, discover that you are the love of your own life, and realise that today is a wonderful day to dump them.
Megan says ... "Lately, I have been listening to a podcast by Florence Given called "Exactly". Florence is a woman in her early 20s based in London, and as a queer woman herself she is a massive ambassador and inspiration for the LGBQ+ community. She has been so influential in my life finding my feet as a bisexual woman in London. She has previously written a book called "Woman don't owe you pretty" which I personally haven't read yet, but is on my list. She has also just written her first novel called "Girl Crush" which is coming out later this year".
