World Cultural Diversity Day - 21st May

Celebrated annually on May 21st, the World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development is an international day supported by the United Nations for the promotion of diversity issues.

The day highlights the richness of the world’s cultures, but also the essential role of intercultural dialogue for achieving peace and sustainable development.

On the 3rd of May, the Trust came together in a Trustwide conversation to launch our Cultural Intelligence programme focused on developing a workforce who lead, manage and engage inclusively through help with the “lens” of Cultural Intelligence.

We are in week 4 of the programme and we caught up with Bernadette and Tatenda ahead of the 21st of May to share the benefits of creating a culturally intelligent workforce and the incredible impact it has towards helping us become a truly inclusive organisation but also the impact it can have on our patient care.

Cultural Intelligence: the competitive edge for leaders - Julia Middleton: What will the leaders of the future need? Julia Middleton argues that it is cultural intelligence, an evolution - moving from IQ and EQ. But what is CQ, how do you master it and why is it so important in a smaller but more interconnected world?
Julia is passionate about helping people to develop as leaders and supporting them to make a tangible contribution to their communities and to wider society. In 1989, Julia formed Common Purpose, a not-for-profit social enterprise. Common Purpose runs leadership development programmes that enable people from different backgrounds, sectors, geographies and generations to work together to solve common problems. Common Purpose now runs local programmes for leaders in cities across the world, and its global programmes bring together leaders from over 100 countries across six continents.

Cultural Humility - Juliana Mosley, Ph.D.: The current state of affairs relative to social justice issues (race, gender, sexual identity and expression, religion, and socio-economic status) shows us that the need for diversity and inclusion in our society is greater than ever.
The diversity and inclusion concept of cultural humility is a current instrument being employed by institutions and organizations that seek to achieve cultural transformation. Juliana believes that through conscious consideration, we can be proactive in preparing for and adhering to the inevitable changes in society. She will challenge us to think about our own personal biases and collectively learn to truly embrace, appreciate, and live communally with those who are different from us. Juliana Mosley, affectionately called Dr. J. by her students, has served the field of education for 20 years, with the last 18 being dedicated to higher education. Juliana seeks to educate and train people to engage in difficult dialog through cultural humility to make the unconscious conscious.

Managing cross cultural remote teams - Ricardo Fernandez: Ricardo talks about the every day complexities of working remotely and managing a team of 30 people from very different cultures and backgrounds. He discusses the benefits of working remotely and the ability to prise productivity over presence. However, there are some interesting challenges - people can have different perceptions of time management, speak the same language but have different interpretations, etc. Challenges like these get compounded when working remotely.
Ricardo is not an expert in cross cultural communication but has over the last 10 years been working remotely with several companies and teams from many different countries. He was born in Spain but spent most of his time living abroad between the USA, France, Netherlands, and Puerto Rico, where he learnt how to adapt to the differences in every day conversation and activities.
